Warcraft 3 Problems
Oct 14th, 2002, 11:14pm

After editing UnitBalance.slk in Excel (office XP) and adding it back into war3.mpq the game will no longer function (crashes out as it's loading the level  Angry)  When I check the newly created Errors directory.  I see 2002-10-14 16.27.07 Error.txt....ok open that:

"This application has encountered a critical error:

The file data is corrupt.

Program:      C:\PROGRAM FILES\WARCRAFT III\WAR3.EXE
File:      Units\UnitBalance.slk"

DOH!

Ok so I go back to war3.mpq...
The file is listed there but unlike all the other files instead of having C-- for it's attributes it has CE-

Unfortunately, your help files doesn't seem to say what these letters stand for...  ??? Could the different attribute be causing the problem?  Or is it something else?

I forget what the E flag means on mpq file info, but it's either something like 'Exists' or 'Encrypted', and in either case it shouldn't make the game crash (although war3 may be different than starcraft in this case, I doubt it).  Much more likely that your changes to the slk were invalid in some way.

If all of the other files in war3.mpq are only C and not E, then I'd be a bit flustered about it...

Well the only other thing I can think of is that Excel gave me a warning that there might be some formatting that didn't carry over to the .slk format.  But I clicked yes to keep that format anyway.   Sad

I still haven't figured out what the E means for the mpq file and Warcraft still keeps crashing.  I think it's possible that Warcraft 3 is checking the flags when it decompresses it to read the file and it's saying the file is "corrupt" because it's not expecting that extra flag to be set....maybe not, I just don't know....

These are what those letters stand for:

C = Compressed
E = Encrypted
X = File was encrypted with an encryption key based on file position and size (flag for this in SFmpq is MAFA_MODCRYPTKEY)

Ok, well maybe Warcraft 3 is refusing to decrypt them?  How do turn off the encryption when a file gets added?  Or better yet, how do I change the properties of a file that's already in the archive?

Try not compressing the file...

My next version of WinMPQ will allow you to specify whether to encrypt a file or not.

Good thing, since the encryption is obviously causing trouble. Oh well, if all else fails, I suppose I could write a tutorial on editing an SLK file in a text editor (along with a file format I found earlier)...there is a possibility that Excel XP is causing trouble and not WinMPQ, though.
