If someone asks you what HTML stands for, and you don't want to look stupid, it stands for Hyper Text Mark-up Language. And also if someone asks you what HTTP satnds for say Hyper Text Transfer Protocol.

That's not what he was asking, though. He wanted to know the difference between different types of HTML files.

There is no difference between .htm and .html, but there is one between the other two and .shtml. The ending .shtml is used for files that you want the server to parse for server-side includes. Most servers require the .shtml file ending, but some don't; some will parse all html files.
